Indian Head Massage

In its country of origin, Indian Head Massage is known as 'Champissage'. The Hindi word Champi – meaning shampoo, and Sage – to massage. In most households in India, hair and scalp massage is an integral part of family life. Originally developed by women as part of their grooming routine to keep their hair strong and healthy. It was and still is traditional for the women in the household to massage each others scalp on a daily basis.

Narendra Mehta, an Ayurvedic practitioner, introduced an adaptation of this to the West in the 1980s, which included massage oils and Chakra work. He extended the massage to include not only the scalp but the upper back, shoulders, arms and face. This treatment has become a well renowned therapy ever increasing in popularity.

  • An Indian Head Massage will last for 30 minutes. This is a seated massage and includes, as above, the upper back, neck and shoulders, arms, face and scalp and a Chakra balance at the end.

This can be carried out using massage oils or if the client prefers it can be done over clothes. The client can also choose if they would like extra oil in their hair.

After the treatment the client may feel tired but this will pass after the body has cleared itself of toxins.

Drink plenty of water and a feeling of vitality will soon follow. You may also be thirsty, this is caused by the bodies need to flush away the toxins that have been released during the treatment.

Rest and relax after the treatment in order for your body to heal itself fully. If possible try to avoid drinking alcohol, caffeinated tea and coffee and eat a light meal.

Please note, your hair may get oily so bring a hair band as you may wish to tie your hair up after the treatment.
